Types of Urdu poetry


There are different types of Urdu poetry. Each has its own charm and impact on its readers. The one common and popular type of Urdu poetry is “Gazal”. Gazal called a subjective poetry because it points to the subject. Gazal is affectionate, emotional and loving form of poetry for this reason it gets more popularity especially in the young generation. The other common and popular form of poetry is Nazam.
Nazam has the following features:
  • Objective type of poetry.
  •   Used for the narration.
  •   Contains philosophy and describes in short words.
  •   Meaningful, significant and expressive form of poetry.
  •   Redolent and suggestive poetry.
  •   Moralistic and didactic poetry.
  •   Ironic form of poetry.
Nazam written in different patterns and these patterns divide into different forms.
These are some classical types of Nazam: 
Masnavi

Masnavi is the form of classical poetry used for narrations in a long descriptive Nazam. Masnavi is written on the specific theme and commonly used romantic, religious and informative themes.

Marsia:


It is also a classical form of poetry and used to express the sorrow themes. In the month of Muharam large numbers of Muslims all over the world used Marsia.

Qasida:

It is used to praise and admire the honorable and Nobel people. It is used for the saints and kings in the past.
All these types of Nazam describe a logical themes and reasons and at the end they draw a conclusion. However these are relatively different types of Nazam.
