Role of Urdu Language in Secular Independent India

On 29 January 2011 “Millat Bedari Muhim committee” (MBMC) arranged a seminar. It was two way national seminar based on the theme “Role of Urdu language in secular independent India” for promoting the Urdu language.

Secretary of MBMC welcomed all well-known intellectuals. In that seminar scholars highlighted qualities of Urdu language and also described the problems faced by Urdu. They pointed out that Urdu is a language of love and peace. But unfortunately some communities have degraded Urdu. Government must take some steps for the establishment of Urdu but it is still failed in taking responsibilities.

Dr Mohammad shahid said that some states like UP and Bihar has large numbers of Urdu speakers but they don’t have enough Urdu medium schools at the primary and secondary level. In contrasts the state Kerala has treated Urdu as a dignified language though it has not too much Urdu speaking population. It has enough primary and secondary level Urdu medium schools.

Some scholars said that whatever we are observing in these days about demolishing of Urdu language, it is because of our behavior in previous years with those people who were not well versed in Urdu. They said that Urdu is a glorious language but now it has shrunken too much. They pointed out that Hebrew a language of Israel in past had demolished and died. When Israel became a state its people worked on large scale to renovate Hebrew, and now Hebrew is a well-known language there.

Scholars also said that 40% words of Hindi language are from Urdu. There is large number of Urdu speakers in India. They should do work for Urdu language.
People just weep for demolishing of Urdu but they do nothing for its re-establishing. They speak English with their children at homes. We all should participate constructively and meaningfully to save Urdu.
